The first units of the Aiways U6 will be delivered in Europe before the end of 2022.
Among the best-known Chinese brands, Aiways is perhaps one of the least known, even though it currently markets one vehicle in Europe, the Aiways U5, and the Aiways U6 will soon follow.
A few months ago we were in Madrid for the official presentation of Aiways in Spain, where we were able to get to know the brand and the Aiways U5 first hand. The event also had a surprise: we were able to see and touch the Aiways U6ion, the concept that was to become the Aiways U6.
Aiways is very popular in China and the Aiways U6 is proving to be a sales success, which the brand hopes will also be reflected in Europe.
Now the Chinese brand has provided more details and information on the version of the U6 that will initially be marketed in Europe, and of course, we will give you more details below.
Aiways U6, a crossover SUV?
The first thing to be clear about is that the Aiways U6 is in a “hybrid” segment, by which we mean that it is halfway between an SUV, sports car, crossover and coupé. Perhaps the model we can most compare in this respect is the Polestar 2, which is also in a “curious and different” segment.
The dimensions of the Aiways U6 are more than generous: it is 4.8 metres long, 1.88 metres wide and 1.64 metres high. The wheelbase is 2.8 metres.
The boot capacity of the Aiways U6 is 472 litres, which can be increased to 1,260 litres if the rear seats are folded down.
Its aggressive design allows for an aerodynamic coefficient of just 0.248, which is more than excellent.
Aiways U6, performance and range
The Chinese manufacturer has also given details of the performance of the Aiways U6 that will be sold in Europe and we have to tell you that Aiways mounts CATL batteries in the U6 with a capacity of 63 kWh, this battery allows a range of up to 400 kilometres under the WLTP cycle thanks to an average consumption between 16.6 and 15.9 kWh/100 km.
Larger battery sizes are also currently being offered on the Chinese market, with the U6 being available with 72 and 88 kWh batteries.
Perhaps this is where we expected more from the Aiways U6 in terms of range, as well as its maximum charging power, which seems a little low, being 90 kW in DC and up to 11 kW in AC.
The electric motor of the Aiways U6 is capable of generating 160 kW (215 hp) of power and 315 Nm of torque, the top speed is limited to 160 km/h and it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 7 seconds.
Furthermore, the Aiways U6 is equipped with the latest active and passive safety and digitalisation technology, including two digital displays, one behind the 8.2-inch steering wheel and a 14.6-inch touchscreen in the centre, which manages the car’s entire infotainment and navigation system.
