Smart has presented its new electric car, the Smart #3, in China.
Smart, currently in the hands of the Chinese group Geely and Mercedes-Benz, is living a new era, which began with the Smart #1, a spectacular urban compact and after seeing it at the official presentation in Madrid, the sensations and expectations are more than good.
Obviously, the Smart #1 is not going to be the brand’s only model, and today it has surprised with the presentation in China of the Smart #3, a compact electric SUV in the C-SUV segment, which aesthetically follows the same patterns as the #1.
What’s more, if you don’t look very closely, in the photos that have been published, the Smart #3 could pass for the Smart #1, couldn’t it?
The Smart #3 is 4,400 mm long, 1,844 mm wide, 1,556 mm high and has a wheelbase of 2,785 mm, while the Smart #1 is 4,270 mm long, 1,822 mm wide, 1,636 mm high and has a wheelbase of 2,750 mm.
As can be seen, the Smart #3 is longer, slightly wider but nevertheless less tall.
Visually, as we have indicated, they are very similar models, maintaining the essence of the design that Mercedes-Benz gave to the Smart #1 and that the Smart #3 has been given a very similar form.
Performance and range of the Smart #3
The Smart #3 is based on the Geely Group’s SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) development platform, so quite a few components (apart from the design) are common to the Smart #1.
The Smart #3 will come with a choice of a single electric motor or two electric motors and all-wheel drive. The single-motor option will maintain the same power output of 200 kW (272 hp) as the Smart #1, while the dual-motor option will add an electric motor on the front axle for an extra 115 kW (154 hp).
The Smart #3 will be fitted with lithium-ion batteries, and although the manufacturer has not provided details or information on battery size or range, everything suggests that it will be fitted with the same batteries currently fitted in the Smart #1, with a useful capacity of 66 kWh.
For the moment Smart has not provided images of the interior of the Smart #3, although seeing the exterior of the vehicle and its similarity to the Smart #1 makes us think that the interior will be a copy, with a few centimetres bigger and little more.
At the same time it is not known when Smart will start marketing this model, nor its starting price, something that we will have to wait perhaps a few weeks or months to find out.
