Lightyear halts production of solar electric car to focus on Lightyear 2

Lightyear’s surprising decision after “scrapping” the Lightyear 0 to focus on its next solar electric car

It was only a few months ago when Lightyear started production of its spectacular solar electric car, the Lightyear 0.

This revolutionary solar electric car is the first big bet of the Dutch manufacturer, which is committed to providing its vehicles with high energy efficiency and harnessing the sun’s energy to recharge its battery.

It is true that the Lightyear 0 is not a vehicle that is within everyone’s reach, as it is a really expensive vehicle, but its launch and deliveries seemed necessary to finance its next big project, the Lightyear 2, a solar electric car that is much cheaper (around $40,000) than the 0.

The surprise has been that Lightyear has taken the decision to completely halt the production of the Lightyear 0 to focus on the development of the Lightyear 2.

Since the Lightyear 2 opened for pre-orders, the brand has received a flood of reservations, which has prompted the manufacturer to make this decision to scrap its entire current strategy and focus on its affordable solar electric car.

Lightyear CEO Lex Hoefsloot had this to say:

“Unfortunately we had to make this decision. The entire Lightyear 0 development process has provided our company with many valuable learnings over the past few years. We are now redirecting all our energy into building Lightyear 2 to make it available to customers in time.

As we say, it comes as a complete surprise that after investing a lot of money in the development of Lightyear 0 and starting its production, it now comes to a complete halt.

Let’s hope that Lightyear continues to have financial support to face this new stage focused on the development and manufacture of the Lightyear 2 with guarantees.
