NIO unveils EC7 and ES8 electric models at NIO Day 2022
A new NIO event, dubbed ‘NIO Day 2022‘, has unveiled two new models from the company, as is customary at its ‘NIO Day’ events. The event, held in Hefei (China), served as a presentation for the NIO EC7 and NIO ES8 SUVs, both equipped with great technology, in addition to the characteristic design with which the brand endows all its models.
Both electric models are based on NIO’s latest second-generation platform, which the brand highlights for its “design, performance, comfort, intelligence, safety and sustainability”.
NIO EC7
This is a mid-large SUV coupe. The combination of the 300 kW induction motor and the 180 kW permanent magnet motor generates a combined power of 480 kW. It is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds and can come to a complete stop from a speed of 100 km/h in 33.9 metres.
The NIO EC7 has an aerodynamic coefficient of 0.230 cd, making it, according to the brand, the SUV with the lowest aerodynamic coefficient in the world. The EC7 comes standard with an active adjustable rear spoiler and air suspension. It also features a panoramic glass roof made of double-layer thermal and acoustic insulation glass, allowing five levels of transparency.
Pricing starts at RMB 488,000 for the 75 kWh battery, RMB 546,000 with 100 kWh battery and RMB 418,000 with BaaS (battery as a service). It is already available for purchase in China, with deliveries in that market expected to begin in May 2023.
NIO ES8
The NIO ES8 is a full-size SUV with seating for six occupants (2+2+2). It features two electric motors offering a total power output of 480 kW, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds and braking from 100 km/h in 34.3 metres. It also features an intelligent braking system, dual-chamber air suspension and intelligent chassis controller.
The NIO ES8 starts at RMB 528,000 for the 75 kWh battery, RMB 586,000 for the 100 kWh battery and RMB 458,000 with BaaS (battery as a service), rising for the ‘Executive’ version. The new ES8 is already available in China, with deliveries scheduled to begin in June 2023.
Common features
Both the EC7 and the new ES8 are equipped with intelligent multi-beam headlights that can project patterns or animations.
Both models are equipped with NIO’s intelligent Banyan system, powered by technologies such as Aquila, a system equipped with 33 high-performance sensors (including LiDAR, and Adam) and a supercomputing platform of up to 1016T, enabled by four Orin X chips.
Inside, both the NIO ES8 and EC7, incorporate the ‘PanoCinema’ panoramic digital cockpit, comprising the world’s first NOMI on-board AI assistant, 7.1.4 immersive sound system with Dolby Atmos technology, 12.8-inch AMOLED centre display and AR and VR devices.
From Q1 2023, both models are expected to offer on-road planning for battery swapping. A solution that several manufacturers have already been testing for some time and that solves the problem of having to spend a lot of time recharging the battery.
Ultra-fast 500kW charging station and third-generation battery swap station
NIO also used the event to unveil its500kW ultra-fast charging station and third-generation battery swap station.
The third-generation battery swap station adopts a new power exchange mode, increasing the capacity to 408 exchanges per day, 30% more compared to the second-generation power exchange station. It has a total computing power of 508 TOPS, and supports the ‘Automatic Summon & Swap’ function, allowing the station to communicate with the vehicle to complete the swap.
