Toyota bZ Compact SUV Concept, the brand’s third electric concept

Toyota bZ Compact SUV, the Japanese brand’s new compact SUV arrives at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show in concept form.

The Los Angeles Auto Show 2022 is hosting many new developments, one of them being Toyota’s third electric car. Dubbed the Toyota bZ Compact SUV Concept, it is an all-electric compact SUV that, for the time being, has been presented in concept form.

After the Toyota bZ4X, which has not been as successful as expected, partly because of its safety problems, the Japanese brand is now presenting its third 100% electric car, under Toyota’s ‘bZ’ range. This follows the recently unveiled Toyota bZ3 sedan. Toyota Group vice president and CEO David Christ said:

“We have only begun to scratch the surface of the Beyond Zero moniker. With an aerodynamic design coupled with intuitive technology features never before seen in a Toyota model, the bZ Concept shows another possible vision of the very near future with our battery electric vehicles.”

As is usual with such concepts, no technical aspects of the vehicle have been revealed. Toyota has placed special emphasis on the design of the bZ Compact SUV Concept, both exterior and interior, highlighting the eco-friendly materials used in the seats, which are made from plant-based and recycled materials.

Technologically, Toyota has also advanced the integration of ‘Yui’, an assistant that responds to occupants’ requests and communicates by means of light and sound signals. Moving on to the interior, a yoke steering wheel can be seen, as we have already seen in other vehicles such as the new Tesla Model S and Model X models, as well as in its premium brand through the also electric Lexus RZ 450e, on which Lexus showed how it works.

Two screens can also be seen, one as an instrument panel and the other as an infotainment screen, the latter with a curved design but not as we are used to seeing. On the other hand, the gearshift is also slightly visible, giving the impression of being too far away from the driver.

This new Toyota bZ Compact SUV Concept is part of the brand’s strategy to launch around 30 electric vehicles globally, five of which will carry the bZ brand name. The company’s ultimate goal is to be carbon neutral by 2050. The brand concludes:

“Toyota envisions a future in which carbon neutrality is achieved through the practical commercialisation of a portfolio of products with advanced alternative fuel and zero-emission propulsion technologies.”
